Our mission for this 1947 California bungalow was to create a modern sanctuary that maximized its footprint and stunning views. The project involved a comprehensive renovation, centered on a complex structural transformation: adding a full walk-out basement Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) and garage. Lodge & Lantern Construction managed the entire process, from initial design collaboration to the final build, overcoming the challenge of a sloped lot by expertly re-grading the landscape to create a seamless, level backyard oasis.
Key Accomplishments
Engineered Lower Level: We engineered and constructed a new lower level to house a walk-out ADU and garage. This significantly increased the home's functional living space while creating a new foundation for the reimagined main floor.
Open-Concept Living: We transformed the main floor into a light-filled great room where the kitchen, dining, and living areas flow together. The gourmet kitchen, featuring Wolf and Miele appliances and custom cabinetry, now serves as the heart of the home, perfect for both daily life and entertaining.
Luxurious Primary Retreat: The primary suite was redesigned as a serene escape, complete with three closets and a spa-inspired bathroom featuring dual sinks and a floor-to-ceiling marble shower.
Outdoor Oasis Creation: By leveling the backyard, we crafted an expansive outdoor living area designed for relaxation and gatherings. The space includes a hot tub, a manicured lawn, a covered dining patio, and a large wooden deck that captures beautiful neighborhood views.
Flexible Living Solutions: In addition to the new ADU, a detached bungalow was updated to provide a private, flexible space ideal for a home office, guest suite, or creative studio.
Results and Impact
This project successfully turned a classic bungalow into a versatile and sophisticated residence. Through thoughtful engineering and a commitment to craftsmanship, we created a home that blends contemporary elegance with highly functional design. The Marine Street project stands as a testament to our ability to execute complex renovations that honor a home's character while adapting it for modern living.
